Soporific? Don’t worry you will be soon. Allow Mummy to guide you through the four stages of sleep into the world of the unconscious. Take a deep breath and relax as your senses are stimulated through the journey that leads us to sleep.

Soporific was a 121 piece I developed for Manchester Poetry Library in April 2022, which I performed in drag as Yummy Mummy. The piece consisted of me putting my audience members to bed as though they were my child. With Soporific I was exploring intimacy in performance through the senses - for example as part of the piece I rub a scented moisturises into my audience members hand or face. However the work I do with Yummy Mummy always aims to make audiences feel slightly uncomfortable in the way I allude to misogyny. My performance with Yummy Mummy in Soporific is highly sexualised and the rhetoric around going to bed plays upon going to bed with a sexual partner or being put to bed by your mother. Soporific was part of my continued research into the sexualisation of mothers and how embedded this is in British society. Due to the ethical guidelines from Manchester Poetry Library the piece was not filmed.
